AEA’s primary stakeholders are its member airlines, currently 22 in number. Any European airline having significant passenger or cargo operations is eligible to submit its candidature to join the Association.
AEA also has strategic partners, companies or organisations which have a common interest in European aviation policy.
AEA’s supreme body is the Assembly of Presidents, comprising the CEOs of the member airlines. A subset of the Assembly, the Presidents’ Committee, directs the activities of the Association. The Assembly meets once a year in the autumn, on the occasion of the Airline Leadership Summit, while the Presidents’ Committee meets at least bi-annually, but usually more frequently, as appropriate.
The day-to-day work of the AEA is conducted within a framework of Committees, Working Groups and Task Forces, made up of experts from among the membership and supported by staff of the Secretariat. The Standing Committees are Public Policy, Technical & Operations, Infrastructure, Environment, Security and Research & Statistics. Important working groups deal with issues such as External Relations and Passenger Rights.
The Brussels-based Secretariat consists of 12 people fulfilling policy, communications, IT, research & statistics and finance & administration functions.
AEA is headed by a President, appointed for a two-year term from within the membership. The President for 2014-15 is Dr. Temel Kotil of Turkish Airlines. The Secretariat is led by a Chief Executive Officer, currently Mr Athar Husain Khan, who was appointed in 2013.
